Ukrainian cable-making industry’s brief overview
1. Production volumes
In 2018 Ukraine has produced 3.8 thousand tons of insulated wire, 8 thousand tons of cord for the up to 1 kV voltage devices, 2.7 thousand tons of fiber-optic cable, 133.3 thousand tons of conductors for up to 1 kV voltage, 9.8 thousand tons of insulated conductors for the voltage of over 1 kV.
Revenues from the sales of wires, cables and electro installation (wiring) devices amounted to USD326.1 million. (UAH8,704.0 million). [1]
2. Largest producers
‘Yuzhcable Works’ PJSC [2] is one of the largest enterprises in Ukraine and the eighth largest in the ex-USSR region in terms of cable-conduction products output. The works has more than 25 thousand mark sizes of own-made products in its arsenal. ‘Yuzhcable Works’ provides industrial enterprises, power plants, mining-and-processing combines, oil deposits and coal mines, metro and construction sites, railways and public transport with its products. The Works is honored with ‘International Gold Star’ award by ‘Business Initiative Directions’ (B.I.D.).
‘Odeskabel’ PJSC [3] is an undisputed leader in terms of production of communication cable in Ukraine and is one of the prominent communication cable producers in East Europe. The enterprise produces wide range of copper and fiber-optic cable; power-, heating- and communication cable; radiofrequency- as well as digital LAN-cable. The entire plant’s nomenclature reckons more than 10 thousand mark sizes.
‘Zaporozhye Cable Plant’ PrJSC [4] is one of the prominent Ukraine’s industrial enterprises making cable-conduction products. It produces wires for transformer-building industry, non-insulated wires for air electricity transmission lines and electric transport contact network, copper flexible wires, wires with enamel and fiberglass insulation. The Plant having been founded in 1863 has now many years of operating experience. It is equipped at a high technical level and uses advanced technologies. Many types of products made at it are unique.
‘Azovcable’ PrJSC [5] is one of the largest cable-conduction products’ maker in Ukraine.
‘Azov Cable Company’ LLC [6] produces cables for vessels, power cables, fire-resistant cables, control cables, cables for explosion-hazardous environment, installation and on-board wires, wires for wickers, cables for Nuclear Power Plants, special cables etc.
‘Alay’ LLC [7] is the company producing cable-conduction products, such as: fire-resistant-, power-, alarm cables, ‘Alay Net’ LAN-cables, mounting cables etc. All in all the nomenclature reckons over 20 thousand commodities.
3. High quality
Main focus of Ukrainian enterprises is in output of high-quality products at competitive prices.
The plants have implemented ISO 9001:2009 (ISO 9001: 2015) quality management system, ISO 14001: 2015 environmental management system as well as OHSAS 18001:2010 health and safety management system (‘Odeskabel’ PJSC). [8] ‘Yuzhcable Works’ has obtained certificates from ‘KEMA’ (the Netherlands) high-voltage lab, ‘VDE’ and ‘innogy SE Eurotest’ institutes (Germany), ‘IEn’ energetics research institute (Poland). [9]
The enterprises keep perfecting their equipment, technological processes, quality system, test-and-trial base. For instance, the factories’ test units are provided with unique equipment by prominent world manufacturers, such as: ‘AESA’, ‘Applied Research Laboratorias’ (Switzerland), ‘Dielec’, ‘JDSU’ and others. Quality control is carried out at all stages starting with raw materials’ acceptance and finishing with trial tests of the ready-made products (‘Odeskabel’ PJSC). [10]
4. Export volumes
According to the results of 2018 some 77.1 thousand tons (for the amount of USD1.47 billion) of insulated wire, cable and other insulated electric conductors as well as fiber-optic cable. European countries have purchased most – 68.6 thousand tons for USD1.43 billion. Poland has become a leader (15.9 thousand tons for USD335 million). Germany has taken second place with 14.7 thousand tons for USD320 million and the third place went to Hungary with 6.5 thousand tons for the amount of USD182 million).
The CIS countries have purchased 7.9 thousand tons for USD38.6 million. Moldova has purchased most (3.7 thousand tons for USD16.4 million) followed by Russia (2.7 thousand for USD15.7 million). [11]
5. Sales markets
Ukraine supplies cable products to more than 60 countries of the world. For instance, shipments by ‘Yuzhcable Works’ are directed to more than 20 countries, including: Azerbaijan, Belarus, Bulgaria, Armenia, Georgia, Israel, India, Iran, Kazakhstan, Kenya, Kyrgyzstan, Lithuania, France, Moldova, the Netherlands, Germany, Poland, Russia, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan. ‘Azov Cable Company’ LLC exports its products to the CIS countries, Denmark, Germany, China, South Korea, India, Vietnam and others. Several representative offices operate in the foreign countries. [13]
‘Zaporozhye Cable Plant’ PrJSC effects shipments to Latvia, Lithuania, Russia, Georgia, Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, Moldova, Uzbekistan and others. The company purposefully works on expanding the geography of exports. [14]
In 2018 exports of products by ‘Odeskabel’ accounted for about 32% of the entire sales volume. The products are exported to Germany, Italy, Spain. Czech Republic, Slovakia, Poland and other countries of Central and East Europe. [15]
