Ukraine-made clocks and watches – brief overview
1. Production of clocks and watches in Ukraine
Ukraine produces wide assortment of clocks both for application in interiors (wall-hung and desktop clocks) and watches to be worn by men and women. According to the results of 2019 Ukraine produced 18.61 thousand pieces of wall-hung clocks. [1]
2. Largest producers
‘Kyiv Watch Factory’ LLC (‘KLEYNOD’ TM) [2] is the largest Ukrainian enterprise mass-producing watches. It was founded in Kyiv back in 1997. Factory’s production program was launched with the watch devoted to the spaceflight of Independent Ukraine’s first ever astronaut Leonid Kadeniuk. In 2002 the factory commenced production of watches under ‘KLEYNOD’ TM. The name of the trademark originates from Ukrainian word ‘клейнод’ which means the special attribute and sign of the state power, Ukrainian hetmans’ power symbol. The assortment of watches reckons more than 200 models gathered in five original collections, namely: ‘Kleynods of Independence’, ‘Embroidery’, ‘Kleynod Forces’, ‘Classic Collection’ and ‘Kleynod Forward’ together with ‘Kleynod Champion’ football collection’s series. There have been more than 200,000 pieces of watches produced in more than 15 years. There are a number of show business celebrities, Heroes of Ukraine and famous politicians among the owners of the ‘KLEYNOD’ TM watches.
‘UTA’ TM [3] produces wide assortment of desktop and wall-hung clocks of any shape, size, with closed- or open-type face. By now the company has released over 10 collections. The clocks are made of ecologically clean materials.
‘Didiart’ TM [4] is a producer of wall-hung clocks, mirrors and other elements of decor.
‘Andywatch’ TM [5] has been active as a producer of watches since 2014. It makes wide assortment of both men’s and women’s watches. The company regularly releases seasonal collections. Every model distinguishes itself for bright, creative design and consistently high quality.
‘ZIZ’ TM [6] produces watches, thermos mugs, passport covers, earrings, mirrors, travel envelopes, belts, purses, cosmetic bags, etc. The watches have diverse designs from unobtrusive stylish minimalism to design patterns and unusual forms.
‘Glozis’ TM [7] is a company producing the items of interior, such as: wall-hung clocks, book holders, hangers, etc. Company’s goal is to create high-quality stylish décor at affordable price. All products by TM ‘Glozis’ are made of natural materials.
3. High quality of Ukraine-made products
Ukraine-made clocks stand for perfect style and high quality.
Ukrainian producers make clocks based on their own artistic, designing and technological developments, follow fashion trends and release new collections regularly. Each accessory’s design is elaborated to minor details and is peculiar in terms of harmony and sophistication.
High quality of the products is assured by usage of original Swiss and Japanese mechanisms in clocks. For instance, the ‘KLEYNOD’ TM watches are assembled by hand on the basis of reliable Swiss mechanisms ‘RONDA-150’ and ‘Sellita SW 200’, [8] whereas ‘Andywatch’ TM watches – on the basis of Japanese ‘Miyota’ quartz mechanism. [9] The watches also feature casings of stainless steel (316L grade) with IPG gilding.
Quality control at Ukrainian enterprises is performed at every stage of production process and consists of 4 levels. The clocks bear 36-month warranty.
4. Exported volumes and geography of exports
Ukraine-made clocks are well-known abroad. For instance, the watches by ‘KLEYNOD’ TM are represented in Canada, the USA, Poland, France and Great Britain.
According to the results of 2019 Ukraine exported 1.99 tons of hand-worn and pocket watches for the amount of USD1.58 million. European countries purchased most – 304.0 kilograms for the amount of USD282.5 thousand (Switzerland accounted for 70.2 kilograms and USD196.1 thousand, Germany – for 140.2 kilograms and USD67.6 thousand). The countries of both Americas purchased 27.2 kilograms for the amount of USD23.7 thousand.
Hand-worn and pocket watches with the casings made of precious metals were exported in 2019 in the amount of 48.7 kilograms and USD239.7 thousand. European countries purchased most – 1.6 kilograms for the amount of USD224.0 thousand (Switzerland accounted for 1.6 kilograms and USD224.0 thousand). Also 48.5 kilograms of clocks not intended for wearing or carrying were exported for the amount of USD254.3 thousand. Asian countries purchased most – 26.0 kilograms for the amount of USD250.1 thousand (India accounted for 26.0 kilograms and USD250.1 thousand). [10]
