Ukraine-made published products – brief overview
1. Book publishing in Ukraine
Ukraine’s publishing houses produce wide assortment of book produce, such as: books for children, teenagers and adults in most diverse genres by both Ukrainian and foreign authors.
According to the results of 2019 Ukraine produced: 6.06 thousand tons of printed books, brochures, postcards and similar products in the form of separate sheets, 32.21 thousand tons of printed books, brochures, postcards and similar products in the forms other than separate sheets, 1,510 tons of printed baby picture books, books for drawing and painting. 2. Largest producers
According to ‘Publishers’ Forum’ Public Association the rating of Ukrainian publishers as per the aggregate number of book copies issued in 2018 was headed by: ‘Publishing House ‘Ranok’’ LLC (translated as ‘Morning’), ‘Publishing House ‘VIVAT’’ LLC, ‘The Old Lion Publishing House’ LLC, ‘Publishing House Navchalna Knyha – Bohdan’ LLC, ‘Publishing House ‘Hramota’’ LLC (can be translated as ‘literacy’), ‘Art Nation Publishing’ TM, Private Enterprise ‘ULA’, ‘Publishing Group KM-Books’ LLC, ‘Publishing Group ‘Osnova’’ LLC, ‘Publishing House ‘Folio’’ LLC, and others. ‘Publishing House ‘Ranok’’, LLC [3] has been leading the domestic market of educational, methodological literature and literature for children for already over 20 years. Its arsenal includes: more than 6 thousand entries of educational-methodological literature created by the best experts; more than 4 thousand entries of literature for children – from books and educational games for the youngest till encyclopedias and atlases fancied even by the adults; more than 8 thousand entries of books and educational manuals with aggregated 12 million copies per annum. The publishing house is pioneer in creation of ‘Е-Ranok’ and electronic versions of handbooks. It has its own Logistic Electronic Center for delivering the products.
‘Publishing House ‘VIVAT’’ LLC [4] is in TOP-3 Ukraine’s largest publishing houses in terms of issued titles and number of copies. The publishing house specializes in issuance of literature for children and teenagers, Ukrainian and foreign non-fiction, journalism and humanitarian studies, as well as in applied literature and gift editions.
‘The Old Lion Publishing House’ LLC [5] is the publishing house for the whole family publishing works of fiction, poetry, educational and scientific-cognitive books for children, motivation and business literature, culinary and album editions which stand out for the quality of print and recognizable style.
‘Publishing House ‘Hramota’’ LLC [6] prints manuals and handbooks for primary, secondary and senior school, vocational training, high school; publishes popular science and artistic editions, fiction, etc.
‘Magic Books’ LLC (‘ART NATION PUBLISHING’ TM) [7] presents its readers with the new form of family entertainment being the books with augmented reality (AR), which resuscitate with the help of ‘WowBox’ application. The publishing house’s catalogue is comprised of ‘Alice in Wonderland’, ‘Alice through the looking glass’, ‘The Nutcracker’, ‘The Nutcracker and the Mouse King’, ‘The Booted Cat’, ‘Sleeping Beauty’ and other works. The company combines traditions and innovations for a contemporary reader to obtain more than just a book. It is the first ever Ukrainian publishing house to have hit record-beating sales of AR books. In 2018 it granted the world with 640 thousand pieces of AR books ‘Alice in Wonderland’ and topped the rating of publishing houses in the ‘the largest number of copies for the same title’ nomination. The aggregated number of two books’ copies about Alisa’s adventures (‘Alice in Wonderland’ and ‘Alice through the looking glass’) amounted to 1,241,050.
‘Publishing House ‘Folio’’ LLC [8] is one of Ukraine’s largest publishing houses. It has been operating in the book market for over 30 years. It publishes classic and contemporary fiction editions in the Ukrainian and Russian languages. The publishing house has developed and prepared for printing more than 100 book series of various genres and themes. There were 512 books in aggregated number of 624,768 copies published in 2019.
3. Ukrainian book abroad
Ukrainian publishing houses actively popularize national literature abroad. For instance, ‘Publishing House ‘VIVAT’’ LLC co-operates with over 20 countries of the world, including the USA, Germany, France, Great Britain, Poland, Latvia, Estonia, Asian countries and others. [9] ‘Publishing House ‘Ranok’’, LLC has its official representative offices abroad and is engaged in joint projects with the prominent publishing houses of the USA, Germany, France, Italy, Spain, Great Britain, Belgium, and other countries. The company is a partner to ‘The Walt Disney Company’, the world’s largest producer of the goods for children.
Ukrainian publishing houses take active part in international exhibitions and themed events. For instance, Ukraine was represented by 27 publishing houses at the world’s largest ‘Frankfurt Book Fair-2019’ exhibition. [10] ‘Art Nation Publishing’ TM was as well representing Ukraine at ‘Bologna Children's Book Fair 2019’ festival, which took place on April 1-4 in Italy. Ukrainian books with augmented reality were positively graded by publishing houses from Great Britain, Spain, Serbia, Italy, Belgium, Germany and South Korea. [11]
Ukraine publishes books in the Russian, Romanian, Kazakh, German, English and other languages which are read in dozens of countries abroad. [12]
4. Exported volumes and geography of exports
According to the results of 2019 Ukraine exported 2.32 thousand tons of printed books, booklets, brochures, postcards and similar printed materials (arranged in brochures or in the form of separate sheets) for the amount of USD16.68 million. Asian countries purchased most – 148.31 tons for the amount of USD10.02 million (China accounted for 205.8 kilograms and USD9.18 million, Israel – for 130.63 tons and USD345.2 thousand, Jordan – for 6.0 kilograms and USD160.0 thousand). The CIS countries purchased 1.61 thousand tons for the amount of USD3.87 million (Russia accounted for 1.38 thousand tons and USD2.94 million, Moldova – for 106.88 tons and USD419.8 thousand). European countries imported 408.68 tons for the amount of USD2.13 million (Poland accounted for 4.64 tons and USD434.6 thousand, Germany – for 92.18 tons and USD371.6 thousand, Slovakia – for 2.64 tons and USD260.4 thousand, Czech Republic – for 64.08 tons and USD182.6 thousand, France – for 47.98 tons and USD177.1 thousand, Greece – for 40.38 tons and USD133.8 thousand). Countries of both Americas acquired 149.28 tons for the amount of USD632.1 thousand (the USA accounted for 148.69 tons and USD616.9 thousand).
Newspapers, magazines and other periodicals (illustrated and non-illustrated, with or without advertisements) were exported by Ukraine in 2019 in the amount of 2.15 thousand tons and USD11.22 million. The CIS countries purchased most – 2.11 thousand tons for the amount of USD11.08 million (Russia accounted for 1.99 thousand tons and USD10.76 million, Belarus – for 79.02 tons and USD199.8 thousand). European countries acquired 40.37 tons for the amount of USD129.1 thousand (Germany accounted for 40.37 tons and USD128.7 thousand).
Picture books for children, books for drawing or painting were exported in 2019 in the amount of 177.71 tons and USD843.1 thousand. The CIS countries purchased most – 165.78 tons for the amount of USD781.9 thousand (Russia accounted for 124.52 tons and USD564.7 thousand, Belarus – for 18.03 tons and USD104.7 thousand). [13]
