Ukraine-made threads – brief overview
1. Production of threads in Ukraine
Ukraine produces broad assortment of threads for any household, industrial and/or technical needs, as well as threads to be used in office work.
Ukraine produces cotton threads along with the broad assortment of synthetic threads made of polyamide, polyether, kapron and other fibers.
Should you plan to purchase some threads you may want to pay your attention to Ukraine-made ones represented by the broad range of cotton, spatula, reinforced, polyester, kapron, polypropylene, polyether threads; threads for sewing clothes, shoes, home textiles, bags, apparel, decorations as well as by threads for office work, different industry branches, construction industry, etc.
2. Largest producers
‘SEWING THREADS FACTORY ‘BARVA’’ LLC (‘Барва’ TM) [1] has been leading Ukraine since 2017 in terms of production of spatula, reinforced sewing threads as well as multifilament and textured threads. Presently there are more than 360 hues of spatula, reinforced threads, [2] 40 hues of multifilament and over 20 hues of textured threads represented in the assortment.
The company produces reinforced threads made of 100% lavsan for works with suit and coat fabrics, sewing uniforms, leather haberdashery, military apparel; threads made of 100% (spatula) polyester for sewing light women’s and men’s outerwear, knitwear, light sportswear, swimsuits, towels, bathrobes, women’s and men’s underwear; black threads made of 100% lavsan [3] for footwear sewing and decorating, soft furniture, sports apparel, jeans fabrics, leather haberdashery, etc.; high-strength threads made of 100% polyester for sewing and trimming footwear, leather and eco leather clothes, soft furniture, car seat covers, technical cloths and so on.
The company product range is represented by both industrial (2,500, 3,000 and 5,000 meters) and household (250 meters) windings.
Private enterprise ‘Scientific and Production Enterprise ‘TVM’’ is one of the largest producers of cords, threads, braid, tows, ropes, twine, etc. The threads are represented by: kapron threads (sewing and technical ones) [4], threads made of cotton (for production of candle wicks, sewing paper bags together, for office work, knitting, shoe repair, macrame, décor, etc), [5] threads made of jute, polypropylene [6] and polyether fiber (for sewing leather items and footwear; making furniture, bags, knapsacks, valises, tires; sewing mattresses, sleeping bags, etc.), [7] as well as by combined threads for office work. [8]
‘Polinet’ LTD [9] is a company active in production of broad assortment of latex threads, twisted around by synthetic fibers.
3. High quality of Ukraine-made products
Ukraine-made threads are of highest quality and comply with international standards. Ukrainian enterprises are equipped with modern highly technological machinery, with the quality control performed at every stage of production process starting with inspection of raw materials and ending with tests of ready-made products. Ukraine-made sewing threads are very close to their English and German analogues in terms of the main criteria. For instance, laboratory test carried out by ‘SEWING THREADS FACTORY ‘BARVA’’ LLC in co-operation with ‘Graf’ company (Germany) – have confirmed high quality of Ukraine-made threads. [11]

4. Exported volumes and geography of exports
Ukraine-made threads are actively exported. For instance, according to the results of 2019 Ukraine exported 3.71 thousand tons of synthetic threads for the amount of USD8.33 million.
The countries of both Americas purchased most – 2.20 thousand tons for the amount of USD4.01 million (the USA accounted for 2.20 thousand tons and USD4.01 million). European countries purchased 642.36 tons of products for the amount of USD2.33 million (Slovakia accounted for 129.24 tons and USD946.7 thousand, Poland – for 178.20 tons and USD675.6 thousand, Belgium – for 320.28 tons and USD642.2 thousand, Italy – for 5.86 tons and USD35.7 thousand, Germany – for 2.62 tons and USD13.7 thousand). The CIS countries acquired 861.49 tons for the amount of USD1.98 million (Russia accounted for 447.10 tons and USD1.04 million, Belarus – for 413.10 tons and USD925.7 thousand).
In 2019 Ukraine also exported 11.22 tons of sewing threads for retail trade made of synthetic and artificial fibers for the amount of USD221.6 thousand. European countries purchased most – 10.10 tons for the amount of USD211.2 thousand (Poland accounted for 7.76 tons and USD171.9 thousand, Germany – for 736.9 kilograms and USD16.8 thousand, Romania – for 516.3 kilograms and USD5.8 thousand, Hungary – for 79.9 kilograms and USD3.1 thousand, Finland – for 176.4 kilograms and USD2.2 thousand, Portugal – for 47.6 kilograms and USD1.8 thousand, the Netherlands – for 130.5 kilograms and USD1.6 thousand, Switzerland – for 178.0 kilograms and USD1.5 thousand, Bulgaria – for 78.5 kilograms and USD1.4 thousand, Lithuania – for 204.5 kilograms and USD1.4 thousand, France – for 80.7 kilograms and USD1.3 thousand), the CIS countries acquired 1.07 tons and USD10.0 thousand (Russia accounted for 555.1 kilograms and USD9.1 thousand).
