Ukraine-made children’s shoes and footwear – brief overview
1. Production of children’s shoes and footwear in Ukraine
Ukraine produces wide assortment of infant footwear for any season: warm winter shoes, comfortable footwear for spring and autumn as well as summer shoes. Should one plan the purchase of high-quality infant shoes, his or her attention should definitely be paid to Ukraine-made footwear. Here the products for any taste can be found, such as: warm winter top and dress boots for kids and teenagers made of natural materials, watertight sneakers, small dress shoes and moccasins, shoes and gym shoes for spring and autumn seasons, light flip flops, summer sandals and so on.
For instance, according to the results of 2019 Ukraine produced 120.1 thousand pairs of infant shoes with the upper part made of natural leather intended for wearing outdoors. [1]
2. Largest producers
‘Chernigov shoe factory ‘Bereginia’’ PJSC (‘БЕРЕГИНЯ’ TM – can be translated as ‘caregiver’) [2] leads Ukraine in terms of children’s footwear production. The shoe factory produces modern footwear made of natural materials for children of all ages, as well as for men and women. Children’s footwear is represented by top boots, dress shoes, semi dress shoes, ordinary shoes, summer shoes, slippers, ballet shoes, prophylaxis orthopedic shoes, etc.
‘Мальви’ TM (translated as ‘mallows’) [3] is one of Ukraine’s largest infant shoes producers since 1995. Brand’s assortment is comprised of over 250 models of children’s footwear, school shoes and shoes for teenagers, such as: top boots, dress boots, shoes, sneakers, gym shoes, moccasins.
‘МIRACLE ME’ TM [4] is a known Ukrainian brand producing high-quality and stylish footwear for children aged between 0 and 12. The company makes its products only of natural leather with the usage of orthopedic sole. All models by default have a built-in supinator which contributes to the correct formation of child’s foot.
‘Шалунішка’ TM (can be translated as ‘playful kid’) [5] has been producing wide assortment of boys’ and girls’ footwear since 2001. Brand’s assortment comprises children’s shoes and footwear sized from 18 to 37, such as: ordinary shoes, sneakers, gym shoes, slip-ons, slippers, crocks, ballet shoes, rubber top boots, kids’ booties, uggy boots, sandals, slingbacks, boots, top boots, and so on. The company also makes special products under trademark of ‘ШАЛУНІШКА-ОРТОПЕД’ TM (can be translated as ‘playful kid – orthopedist’), namely, high-quality footwear featuring prophylaxis and orthopedic properties.
‘Roma Style’ TM [6] has been producing comfortable, stylish and long-lasting children’s, men’s and women’s shoes since 2000. Wide assortment of shoes for girls and boys, such as: slingbacks, sneakers, moccasins, dress shoes, boots are made here.
3. High quality of Ukraine-made products
Ukraine-made children’s footwear is not only fashionable and practical but it is also safe and insures correct formation of kid’s foot and musculoskeletal system. The footwear is made in accordance with the latest innovative technologies; it is equipped with orthopedic insole and is recommended by Association of Ukrainian orthopedists. [7]
Children’s shoes and footwear in Ukraine is made only of natural, eco-friendly and safe materials. High quality of the products is further insured by Ukrainian factories’ using the equipment supplied by prominent European manufacturers, namely: ‘Cherim’, ‘Durkopp Adler’, ‘Atom’, ‘Comeltz’, ‘Brother’. 4. Exported volumes and geography of exports
Ukraine-made children’s shoes and footwear are well-known abroad. For instance, ‘БЕРЕГИНЯ’ TM supplies its products to Russia, Canada, Austria and Czech Republic, [11] whereas ‘Roma Style’ TM exports to European countries.
According to the results of 2019 Ukraine exported 1.68 thousand tons of footwear made of natural leather (including infant shoes) with sole made of rubber, plastic, natural and composite leather for the total amount of USD32.74 million. European countries purchased most – 1.32 thousand tons for the amount of USD27.94 million (Italy accounted for 566.95 tons and USD12.84 million, Denmark – for 211.49 tons and USD4.12 million, Romania – for 266.51 tons and USD4.10 million, Poland – for 135.66 tons and USD3.44 million, Lithuania – for 54.07 tons and USD1.45 million, Slovakia – for 60.15 tons and USD1.06 million).
The CIS countries purchased 335.81 tons for the amount of USD4.00 million (Russia accounted for 50.93 tons and USD1.12 million, Kazakhstan – for 114.93 tons and USD1.08 million, Belarus – for 78.75 tons and USD993.4 thousand), the countries of both Americas acquired 5.18 tons for the amount of USD162.5 thousand (Canada accounted for 4.75 tons and USD133.1 thousand).
In 2019 Ukraine also exported 1.01 thousand tons of footwear with the upper part made of textile materials (including infant shoes) and sole made of rubber, plastic, natural and composite leather for the total amount of USD10.92 million. European countries purchased 615.80 tons for the amount of USD7.48 million (Poland accounted for 377.32 tons and USD3.85 million, Romania – for 199.18 tons and USD2.93 million, Denmark – for 5.86 tons and USD181.2 thousand, Italy – for 10.23 tons and USD131.0 thousand).
The CIS countries purchased 361.99 tons for the amount of USD2.95 million (Russia accounted for 133.66 tons and USD1.54 million, Moldova – for 135.68 tons and USD888.3 thousand, Belarus – for 66.09 tons and USD241.5 thousand, Kazakhstan – for 20.99 tons and USD230.6 thousand), Asian countries accounted for 31.49 tons and USD255.5 thousand (Georgia accounted for 30.23 tons and USD210.8 thousand).
