Ukraine’s toys, development and creativity sector – brief overview
1. Production of children’s toys in Ukraine
Ukraine produces wide assortment of children’s toys, educational and board games. According to the results of 2019 Ukraine produced 233.21 thousand pieces of toys imitating animals and other creatures, 357.32 thousand pieces of toy trains, reduced-sized models, sets for assembling, toys for designing, 2,328.8 thousand pieces of puzzles. 2. Largest producers
‘RCS-Components’ LLC [2] is the largest producer of unique ‘Practical Electronics’ electronic assembling kits. With the help of the kit children and adults have an opportunity to learn and explore the world of electronics in entertaining and exciting way. At the moment the assortment reckons eight types of kits, each of them being dedicated to a separate theme, namely: ‘Resistors’, ‘Switches’, ‘Semiconductors’, ‘Optoelectronics’, ‘Power sources’, ‘Operational amplifiers’, ‘Timer’, ‘Digital electronics’. Electronics lovers mastering all themes one-by-one make their way from learning the basics to creating sophisticated mechanisms independently.
‘Копиця’ TM [3] is one of the largest producers of soft toys in Ukraine. Wide assortment of toys, such as: animals, soft dolls, souvenir toys, rucksacks and bags, chairs and pillows, etc. is made here. The company runs its own production of materials and accessories used for production of soft toys thereon.
‘Левеня’ TM (can be translated as ‘lion cub’) [4] produces wide assortment of soft toys: traditional Teddy bears, cloth toys, gift pillows, ethnic toys in national style, etc. Cloths and fillers used for production of toys are certified and have all necessary sanitary-hygienic conclusions.
‘Vladi Toys’ TM [5] is one of the leading producers of the wide assortment of children’s educational games. Production facilities exceed 2 thousand square meters, and production capacity exceeds 800 thousand pieces per month.
‘Пазліка’ TM [6] produces high-quality and extremely interesting magnet and cardboard puzzles for children. The company possesses all necessary certificates of quality, confirming products’ eco-friendliness and safety. Puzzles are suitable for children aged between 2 and 7.
‘Cubika’ TM [7] is a Ukrainian brand producing toys of Carpathian ecologically clean beech and sycamore. The toys are meant for younger children and contribute to the fast development of their main skills and wonts. Main categories of toys are: sorters, toy cars, assembling kits. ‘KomarovTOYS’ ТМ [9] is a company producing wide assortment of educational games: laces, magnet boards for drawing with chalks and felt-tip pens, easels, pyramids, construction kits, insert frames, geometry sets, sorters, mosaics, balancers, puzzles, screens for puppet shows, shadow theaters, alphabet cubes, align-a-picture cubes, magnetic letters, etc.
‘Bombat Game’ LLC [10] stands for Ukrainian board games with interesting miniatures for entire family. It is a European quality product at a Ukrainian price. The company has been working in the market for over 8 years and has more than 30 board games in its product assortment.
‘Tigres’ ТМ [11] is a producer of children’s toys (soft-filled and plastic ones), bed linen for children and children’s clothing.
‘Thinkers’ TM [12] produces author board games and puzzles for children and adults. Tasks set by ‘Thinkers’ games train different types of thinking and are divided into categories: structure, reason, logic, sequence, imagination, model, calculation, erudition, humor, spatial thinking.
‘HEGA’ TM [13] is a workshop of children’s wooden toys. It produces educational kits, dollhouses, toys, dolls’ furniture, sorters, laces, etc.
‘DRIMOTA’ TM [14] stands for handmade wooden dollhouses and dolls’ furniture. Apart from dollhouses the company makes small shelves for car models arrangeable into mini car parks. Dollhouses can be further painted if wished by a child. Each dollhouse is made as per individual order.
‘Arial’ TM [15] has been holding leading positions in Ukrainian board game market since 2002. Great product assortment covers all age groups from infants to adults. All products are made of ecologically clean materials. ‘KFT (Kyiv Factory of Toys) ‘ENERGYPLUS’’ LLC [16] produces wide assortment of plastic cubes, board games, puzzles and recreation games. All toys are certified according to Ukrainian legislation and are safe for children. The puzzles are big and will suit infants aged 2 onwards.
‘Freia’ ТМ [17] makes wide assortment of knitted dolls, toys and sling-beads. Company’s mission is to revive and popularize the idea of a traditional, author and eco-friendly toy. When making its toys the brand utilizes the ideas of Waldorf education. The features of a toy’s image are minimally outlined. Thus, a child will imagine the emotional state for each game situation independently, which is very important for development of his or her fantasy.
‘Chic Box’ TM [18] proposes absolutely new approach to designing by letting children to erect a full-height fortress on their own. The construction kit is made of cardboard; it is eco-friendly, safe and durable. Each box contains 100 cardboard bricks, which are easy to assemble and disassemble.
3. High quality of Ukraine-made products
Ukraine-made toys and games are eco-friendly, safe and correspond to the highest quality standards. Producers control production process at its every stage. The toys correspond to the requirements of DSTU EN 71 (1,2,3), ‘State sanitary regulations and norms’ 5.5.9.012-98 and Directive 2009/48/ЕС on safety of toys and are tested in the best laboratories of Great Britain, Germany and Ukraine. Ukraine-made products also correspond to the requirements of Technical Regulations #UA.TR.108.0002-18. All products are certified, are fully hypoallergenic and are absolutely safe. [20]
Ukrainian producers have undergone certification of their products according to European Union’s Directives on quality of products for children in order to establish stable planned co-operation with the EU countries’ market. ‘Vladi Toys’ TM company is officially registered at ‘amfori BSCI’ platform and according to the audit results on conformity to ‘amfori BSCI’s Business Ethics Code’ has received the highest ‘A’ mark. 4. Exported volumes and geography of exports
Ukraine-made toys and games are well-known not only in Ukraine and abroad as well. For instance, educational products by ‘Vladi Toys’ TM are popular in European countries and in the CIS; ‘Пазліка’ TM actively exports its products to European countries; ‘Cubika’ TM sells to the CIS countries and Europe. Since 2015 products by ‘KomarovTOYS’ ТМ are supplied to the markets of EU, Middle East and Africa. [22]
According to the results of 2019 Ukraine exported 3.93 thousand tons of dolls, doll’s prams, wheeled toys, toys, puzzles, etc. for the amount of USD31.13 million. The CIS countries purchased most – 2.21 thousand tons for the amount of USD12.88 million (Russia accounted for 1.64 thousand tons and USD8.62 million, Moldova – for 237.79 tons and USD2.58 million, Belarus – for 277.48 tons and USD1.24 million). The European countries purchased 1.26 thousand tons for the amount of USD11.20 million (Latvia accounted for 413.22 tons and USD4.46 million, Poland – for 424.83 tons and USD2.38 million, Germany – for 50.54 tons and USD1.07 million), countries of both Americas imported 285.93 tons for the amount of USD3.53 million (the USA accounted for 269.36 tons and USD3.26 million), Asian countries purchased 126.53 tons for the amount of USD1.85 million (Japan accounted for 18.01 tons and USD376.1 thousand, Korea – for 14.04 tons and USD264.5 thousand, China – for 18.22 tons and USD262.0 thousand).
In 2019 it was also exported: 982.84 tons of board and room games, goods and entertainments as well as equipment for videogames for the total amount of USD6.21 million. The CIS countries acquired 466.12 tons for the amount of USD2.36 million (Russia accounted for 360.06 tons and USD1.65 million, Moldova – for 37.20 tons and USD381.3 thousand), European countries purchased 455.21 tons for the amount of USD2.14 million (Poland accounted for 239.57 tons and USD924.7 thousand, Germany – for 109.67 tons and USD374.2 thousand, Great Britain – for 3.76 tons and USD213.0 thousand, Romania – for 34.70 tons and USD158.3 thousand, Czech Republic – for 39.51 tons and USD147.4 thousand), Asian countries acquired 31.84 tons for the amount of USD213.0 thousand (Georgia accounted for 9.66 tons and USD112.0 thousand).
