Ukraine-made fabrics, sewing materials and garment accessories – general overview

Production of fabrics and garment accessories in Ukraine 

Ukraine produces broad assortment of high-quality fabrics, sewing materials and garment accessories for sewing clothes, footwear, accessories, haberdashery, linen, home and household textiles, décor, etc. Should you plan to purchase any fabrics, sewing materials or garment accessories, you may want to pay your attention to Ukraine-made ones. Broad assortment of cotton, woolen, knitted, linen, silk fabrics, as well as artificial and natural leather, faux fur, insulating materials, threads, yarns, zip-fasteners, needles, ribbons, braid, labels, pins, buttons, knobs, tags, fasteners, retainers, tailoring accessories, etc. are made here.

According to the results of 2019 Ukraine produced 4,037.1 thousand square meters of cotton fabrics made of the single colour threads with the surface density exceeding 200 grams per square meter, 7,399 tons of machine- and hand-knitted canvas, 7,831 tons of leather made of hairless whole cattle skins and 1,426 tons of leather made of non-whole cattle skins, 1,797 tons of non-packaged carded woolen yarn and yarn made of thin animal hair, 813 tons of single-thread yarn and yarn winded of synthetic threads, and so on. Largest producers

‘TEXTERNO’ OJSC (Ternopil association ‘TEXTERNO’) [2] leads Ukraine in terms of textiles production not only in Ukraine, but in Europe as well. The enterprise was founded in 1968 as a production complex with complete technological cycle of cotton procession into a ready-made fabric. The complex occupies the area of 220 thousand square meters. Enterprise’s production capacity of 100% cotton high-quality fabric amounts up to 7 million square meters of fabrics per month. 

The enterprise produces broad assortment of fabrics with the surface density from 110 grams per square meter to 300 grams per square meter. The fabrics feature atlas, linen, serge and waffle weave and are cut from 142 centimeters to 240 centimeters wide. The assortment is comprised of: unbleached calico, atlas, mitcal, poplin, ranforce, serge, teak, suit atlas, towel waffle fabrics, half panama fabric, furniture fabrics, table linen fabrics (for table cloths, table napkins and aprons), fabrics for work clothes, etc.      

JV ‘Cheksil’ LLC [3] is the largest Ukrainian and one of the largest European producers of woolen fabrics. The company manufactures worsted fabrics and woolen tissues for the most diverse clothing: men’s as well as women’s jackets, suits, trousers, coats along with military and corporate uniforms. 

The assortment is comprised of: fabrics for suits and trousers (woolen tissues, half-woolen ones, stretch-fabrics with LYCRA, woolen cloths with addition of cotton an flax, woolen cloths with polyester-viscose), fabrics for jackets (100% woolen worsted tissues), fabrics for coats (classic woolen velour, fabrics with addition of cashmere and Angora rabbit wool, ‘melton’- and ‘castor’-style treated fabrics, ‘boucle’ with shaped yarns, various tweeds, vast collection of fabrics for men’s coats, long fleece fabrics with mohair, fabrics with imprinted pictures, etc.), half-woolen tissues for uniforms with contents of Coolmax and Thermolite fibers (such tissues are meant for military and state departmental uniforms (Police, Customs, Prosecutor’s office, Railway office, etc.), fabrics for corporate uniforms (air lines, banks, security services, and so on), fabrics for school uniforms, etc. 

Trade and production group of companies ‘Textile-Contact’ [4] (‘TK DT-CHERNIHIV’ LLC) – has been a prominent Ukrainian producer of fabrics, accessories, home underwear, special purpose clothing and military uniforms since 1995. Company’s product assortment reckons more than 30 thousand kinds of fabrics, such as: chintz, atlas, unbleached calico, velvet, flannel, fable, guipure, taffeta, tulle, atlas, batiste, jacquard, matting, poplin, etc. [5]
‘Boguslav woolen factory’ SLC and ‘Stebliv cotton spin-and-weave factory’ SLC (‘Ярослав’ TM – transliterated as ‘Yaroslav’) [6] is one of Ukraine’s largest fabrics manufacturers. Cotton fabrics are represented by a broad assortment of printed calico [7], flannel and atlas fabrics. [8]

‘T-style’ LTD [9] has since 2008 been leading Ukraine in terms of high-quality knitted fabric production. The company produces different kinds of fabric: single jersey (stockinette), pique, plush and mohair fabric, interlock, covered rubber thread (rib fabric 1x1, rib fabric 2x2), double thread, triple thread, etc.  Company’s production capacity amounts to over 20 tons of canvas per day. 

‘KNITTING FACTORY ‘ROZA’’ PJSC [10] is one of Ukraine’s prominent enterprises producing high-quality knitted canvases. The company has been working for more than 90 years. The fabrics are made of natural and synthetic threads. The company produces knitted canvases, namely: rib knit (elastic), stockinette, (jersey), pique fabric (lacoste), footer, interlock, etc. 
‘Trade House ‘Zhytomyr Flax Factory’’ LLC [11] – is the largest Ukrainian producer of flax canvas and clothes made of flax fabric, flax table linen and flax bed linen. The company produces untreated flax fabrics, treated flax fabrics, rough and smooth fabrics, dyed fabrics, patterned fabrics, etc. 

‘KYIV SILK WEAVING MILL’ PrJSC [12] is one of Ukraine’s largest producers of fabrics made of natural silk, crepe de Chine, and raw silk. [13]

‘FIM’ LLC [14] has been leading Ukraine in terms of producing knitted-materials-based artificial fur since 1976. The enterprise has gained reputation of a reliable partner, able to compete with prominent world artificial fur manufacturers. Enterprise’s production capacity is over 7 million square meters of artificial fur per annum. The company makes broad assortment of products: over 100 kinds of artificial natural-looking (fake) furs (imitating animal skins: rabbit, raccoon, mink, chinchilla, fox, etc.), more than 40 kinds of wool-containing furs, more than 500 variants of decorated fur, more than 80 kinds of ‘special purpose’ fur, the ‘toy’ fur with hair length from 4 millimeters to 120 millimeters, etc. 

‘Baryshivskyi Shkiryanyi Zavod’ (Baryshivka tannery) PrJSC (‘ULTRA LEATHER’ TM) [15] is the largest producer of natural leather in Ukraine. Company’s activity is based on procession of leather raw materials and production of leather for footwear, belts and haberdashery. The product assortment also features treated cattle skins for further application. These leathers differ in terms of thickness, textures, colours and types of treatment.

‘LIMITED LIABILITY COMPANY PULSAR AND CO’ [16] is the largest Ukrainian enterprise producing nonwovens. The product assortment reckons about 200 commodities, such as: insulation materials and canvases for clothes, geosynthetic materials, furniture canvases for production of soft furniture, mattresses and home textiles, filtration materials, canvases for production of footwear, agricultural purpose canvases (agro textiles), basis for linoleum laying, oilcloth, technical napkins, eco purpose canvases, eco-friendly construction insulation materials, etc.  

‘SEWING THREADS FACTORY ‘BARVA’’ LLC (‘Барва’ TM) [17] has been leading Ukraine since 2017 in terms of production of spatula, reinforced sewing threads as well as multifilament and textured threads. Presently there are more than 360 hues of spatula, reinforced threads, [18] 40 hues of multifilament and over 20 hues of textured threads represented in the assortment. 

The company produces reinforced threads made of 100% lavsan for works with suit and coat fabrics, sewing uniforms, leather haberdashery, military apparel; threads made of 100% (spatula) polyester for sewing light women’s and men’s outerwear, knitwear, light sportswear, swimsuits, towels, bathrobes, women’s and men’s underwear; black threads made of 100% lavsan [19] for footwear sewing and decorating, soft furniture, sports apparel, jeans fabrics, leather haberdashery, etc.; high-strength threads made of 100% polyester for sewing and trimming footwear, leather and eco leather clothes, soft furniture, car seat covers, technical cloths and so on. 

The company product range is represented by both industrial (2,500, 3,000 and 5,000 meters) and household (250 meters) windings. 

‘Bobilon’ TM [20] is a #1 knitted yarn producer in Ukraine. The yarn is made of 100% cotton and is available in 55 colours. The yarn is produced with different thread diameter – from 3 millimeters to 11 millimeters. 

3. High quality of Ukraine-made products 

Ukraine-made fabrics, materials and garment accessories are of highest quality and correspond to international standards. Ukrainian factories have installed the newest weaving equipment and modernized spinning machines provided by the best European manufacturers, [21] such as: German-made carding, winding and warping machines, ‘GERBER’ and ‘APOLLO’ (the USA) flooring complexes, ‘Volkmann’ and HDB (Belgium, Germany) twisting and spinning machines and so on. [22]

Ukrainian producers use only high-quality raw materials: Belcoro-certified knitted and weaving yarn [23]. Ready-made Ukrainian fabrics are certified in accordance with ISO 9001 standard and comply with the norms of ÖКО-ТЕХ 100. [24]
Quality control system at Ukrainian enterprises is set and functions according to the requirements of ISO 9001:2015. [25] The enterprises are also certified in accordance with international ISO 14001:2015 ecology standard [26] and have certificate of conformity with the norms of DSTU ISO 10012:2005 measuring system. [27]

Quality control is performed on an hourly basis at every stage of production process: starting with inspection of raw materials finishing with QC of the ready-made products on their conformity to due linear dimensions and appearance. Ukrainian enterprises have their own accredited laboratories equipped with highly accurate German and Japanese machinery for conducting physical and mechanical test. 

Each lot of products undergoes mandatory inspection, which allows to releasing products with defects. The passport of quality is filled in for each product lot. [28]

4. Exported volumes and geography of exports

Ukraine-made fabrics, sewing materials and garment accessories are well-known abroad. For instance, JV ‘Cheksil’ LLC exports more than 70% of its products to 25 countries of the world, namely: Russia, Belarus, Moldova, Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Turkmenistan, the USA, Canada, Great Britain, Italy, Spain, Germany, France, Greece, Sweden, Poland, Hungary, Estonia, Lithuania, Turkey, Syria, China and others. In the last 5 years the exported value has reached USD15 million. [29]  

More than 50% of the products’ volume made by ‘Baryshivskyi Shkiryanyi Zavod’ (Baryshivka tannery) PrJSC are exported, [30] ‘T-style’ LTD has official representative offices in Wroclaw and Warsaw, [31] whereas ‘KNITTING FACTORY ‘ROZA’’ PJSC exports its products to Germany, Poland, France and Belgium. [32]

‘TEXTERNO’ OJSC supplies its products to European countries, ‘Ярослав’ TM – to Belgium, Italy, Lithuania, Germany, Belarus, Israel, Russia, China, Turkey, Georgia, Bahrain, Kazakhstan, [33] Private Enterprise ‘VIKOS-2011’ sells to Russia, [34] ‘Trade House ‘Zhytomyr Flax Factory’’ LLC exports to Turkey and Germany, [35] ‘FIM’ LLC – to Russia, Czech Republic, the USA and other countries. [36] 

‘Bobilon’ TM exports yarn to the USA, Canada, South Korea, Czech Republic, Slovakia, Bulgaria, Romania, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Georgia, Kazakhstan, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan, Moldova and Poland. [37]

According to the results of 2019 Ukraine exported: 310.18 tons of cotton fabrics with less than 85% weight contents of cotton for the amount of USD1.26 million (the CIS countries purchased most – 305.96 tons for the amount of USD1.20 million, European countries accounted for 4.21 tons and USD62.9 thousand), 47.08 tons of cotton fabrics with 85% and more weight contents of cotton and surface density of up to 200 grams per square meter for the amount of USD688.2 thousand (European countries purchased most – 46.00 tons for the amount of USD679.0 thousand, the CIS countries accounted for 991.7 kilograms and USD6.2 thousand), 27.72 tons of cotton fabrics with 85% and more weight contents of cotton and surface density of over 200 grams per square meter for the amount of USD298.3 thousand (European countries purchased most – 14.89 tons for the amount of USD208.3 thousand, the CIS countries accounted for 8.91 tons and USD54.6 thousand), 285.62 tons of carded wool and carded thin animal hair fabrics for the amount of USD2.88 million (European countries purchased most – 227.17 tons for the amount of USD2.18 million, the CIS countries accounted for 58.44 tons and USD699.2 thousand), 45.87 tons of combed wool and combed thin animal hair fabrics for the amount of USD869.4 thousand (the CIS countries purchased most – 42.07 tons for the amount of USD691.6 thousand, European countries accounted for 3.80 tons and USD177.8 thousand). 
In 2019 Ukraine also exported: 323.63 tons of knitted canvases for the amount of USD2.29 million (European countries purchased most – 267.44 tons for the amount of USD1.99 million, the CIS countries accounted for 55.68 tons and USD285.8 thousand), 190.28 tons of knitted canvases (wider than 30 centimeters and containing 5% and more of elastomeric and rubber threads for the amount of USD1.18 million (European countries purchased most – 162.65 tons for the amount of USD1.08 million, African countries accounted for 18.45 tons and USD96.5 thousand), 78.46 tons of piled knitted canvases for the amount of USD553.8 thousand (European countries purchased most – 44.49 tons for the amount of USD361.7 thousand, the CIS countries accounted for 31.35 tons and USD163.6 thousand), 637.85 tons of treated and untreated flax fiber for the amount of USD779.7 thousand (Asian countries purchased most – 310.82 tons for the amount of USD397.0 thousand, European countries accounted for 319.54 tons and USD351.3 thousand), 4.39 tons of linen fabrics for the amount of USD87.4 thousand (European countries accounted for 4.27 tons and USD86.0 thousand), 286.4 kilograms of silk threads for the amount of USD49.2 thousand (European countries accounted for 286.4 kilograms and USD49.2 thousand), 278.4 kilograms of fabrics with weight contents of silk threads not less than 85% for the amount of 48.3 thousand (European countries accounted for 278.4 kilograms and USD48.3 thousand). 

In 2019 Ukraine also exported: 11.20 thousand tons of tanned leather, cattle skin crust, etc. (untreated) for the amount of USD27.91 million (European countries purchased most – 10.91 thousand tons for the amount of USD27.52 million, the CIS countries accounted for 16.41 tons and USD7.9 thousand), 1.69 thousand tons of extra-treated tanned leather or cattle skin crust for the amount of USD54.15 million (European countries purchased most – 1.56 thousand tons for the amount of USD51.67 million, the CIS countries accounted for 98.90 tons and USD2.10 million), 3.71 thousand tons of synthetic threads for the amount of USD8.33 million (the countries of both Americas purchased most – 2.20 thousand tons for the amount of USD4.01 million, European countries accounted for 642.36 tons and USD2.33 million), 11.22 tons of sewing threads made of synthetic and artificial fibers for retail trade for the amount of USD221.6 thousand (European countries purchased most – 10.10 tons for the amount of USD211.2 thousand, the CIS countries accounted for 1.07 tons and USD10.0 thousand), 391.32 tons of chenille yarn for the amount of USD5.76 million (the CIS countries purchased most – 372.56 tons for the amount of USD5.54 million, European countries accounted for 18.76 tons and USD222.6 thousand), 46.57 tons of non-packaged carded wool yarn for retail trade for the amount of USD266.1 thousand (European countries accounted for 46.56 tons and USD266.0 thousand), 29.17 tons of unpackaged cotton yarn with 85% weight contents of cotton for the amount of USD102.2 thousand (European countries purchased 27.15 tons for the amount of USD101.0 thousand), 4.76 tons of cotton packaged yarn for the amount of USD37.7 thousand (European countries accounted for 2.06 tons and USD14.4 thousand), 10.93 tons of buttons, knobs and fasteners for the amount of USD214.0 thousand (European countries purchased most – 10.59 tons for the amount of USD209.7 thousand), 34.55 tons of zip-fasteners for the amount of USD490.9 thousand (European countries purchased most – 22.08 tons for the amount of USD343.6 thousand, the CIS countries accounted for 12.46 tons and USD147.3 thousand).
