Ukraine-made passenger vessels – brief overview

1.
Production of passenger vessels in Ukraine 

Ukraine produces broad assortment of passenger vessels, such as: hydrofoil high-speed passenger vessels, car-and-passenger ferries; pleasure, sport and tourist boats, etc. 

According to the results of 2019 Ukraine produced: 20,950 pieces of inflatable pleasure and sport boats as well as 928 pieces of pleasure and sport motor boats. [1]

Largest producers

‘NIBULON’ LTD [2] is a leader among contemporary shipbuilding enterprises in Ukraine. The plant is active in complete building of vessels and in their repair. The company is one of domestic leaders in increasing fleet’s tonnage and its upgrading. As of September 2020 the fleet reckoned up 82 units with the aggregate deadweight of over 156 thousand tons, including: 4 high-speed passenger hydrofoil vessels, 46 units of non-self-propelled cargo fleet, 23 tugboats, the ‘Mykolayivets’ strong self-propelled dredging vessel, self-propelled the ‘NIBULON MAX’ reloader (П-140 project), self-propelled the ‘Svyatyi Mykolay’ (Saint Nicolas) floating crane, 2 non-self-propelled the ‘Nibulonovets’ and the ‘Nibulonovets-2’ floating cranes, 2 soil removal scows, etc. 

The company keeps expanding and modernizing the production. For instance, in 2017 the enterprise reconstructed the slipway in order to be in condition for building an up to 140-meter long vessels. ‘NIBULON’ LTD not only builds fleet for itself, but to order as well. 

High-speed passenger the ‘NIBULON Express’ hydrofoil vessels hit maximum speed of 65 kilometers per hour and feature the cruising range of up to 500 kilometers. Autonomous working time reaches 7 hours.

‘Plant ‘Kuznya on Rybalsky’ PrJSC [3] manufactures self-propelled and towed barges, high-speed (up to 40 knots) car-and-passenger vessels; fishing industry, scientific research and geological prospecting vessels; port and rescue tugboats, garbage collectors; fire-, port- and transport-boats; container ships with up to 4,000 tons load capacity, tankers, food transporters, chemicals transporters with up to 5000 tons dead weight, technical fleet vessels, pontoons, floating docks with 1,500-2,000 tons load capacity, floating hotels (floatels), quay, recreation bases, floating workshops and so on. 

The vessels are built under supervision of the best-known world classifying societies, such as: Lloyd’s Register of Shipping (LRS), Germanischer Lloyd (GL or DNV GL as of 2013), Bureau Veritas (BV). The Plant was founded in 1862 and has launched about a thousand ships and vessels of various applications since then.

High-speed car-and-passenger ferries are classified according to IMO as high-speed B-class vessels.  The main area of their usage is the Mediterranean Sea with maximal radius according to IMO HSC. 

‘SMG’ (SMART MARITIME GROUP) [4] has two shipyards (in Kherson and Mykolayiv) building general purpose and offshore vessels, tankers, tugboats, passenger vessels, etc. 

Shipyards’ production facilities and equipment provide for accomplishment of complete shipbuilding cycle, starting with steel cutting and hull formation and finishing with mounting of propulsive complex and special systems.

Private Enterprise ‘AQUA-STORM COMPANY’ [5] is one of Ukraine’s leaders in production of inflatable boats, RIBs and runabouts. The company produces: inflatable boats of ‘AQUA STORM’, ‘STORM EVOLUTION’, ‘MAGELLAN’ and ‘LUCKY’ series, boats with inflatable balloons and rigid plastic bottoms (‘RIB AMIGO’) as well as ‘STORM FISH’ runabouts. The company has diploma by Swiss Institute of Quality Standards (SIQS). The company actively develops its own trade network in Europe and all over the world. 

Shipbuilding Company ‘KOLIBRI’ [6] has since 1995 been a prominent Ukrainian and one of the strongest European producers of small vessels. The company consists of a design bureau, two modern shipbuilding factories with total production capacity of 70 thousand boats per annum and ‘ROTOFORM’ production company. The products by SBC ‘KOLIBRI’ are developed in accordance with the ISO/CD 6185 standards and are made in compliance with the 2013/53/EU Directive. SBC ‘KOLIBRI’ is the only small vessel producer in Ukraine, making practically all accessories and additional equipment for its boats at its own enterprises. The assortment of products is extraordinarily broad, and is comprised of: inflatable and plastic boats, pontoon runabouts, kayaks, Stand Up Paddleboards (SUPs), aqua bikes, accessories and additional equipment for boats.

‘Grand Marine’ [7] produces deluxe and premium class boats (RIBs, fiberglass motor boats, collapsible inflatable canoes and boats). The following product series are made: ‘GRAND Golden Line’, ‘GRAND Silver Line (DeLuxe/Sport/Open)’, ‘GRAND Aluminum Line’, ‘GRAND RANGER’, ‘GRAND CORVETTE’, ‘GRAND ARGUS’, ‘GRAND Nautilus’, ‘GRAND Regatta’.

High quality of Ukraine-made products 

Ukraine-made passenger vessels comply with the norms of international and domestic standards, conventions and codes, such as: The International Convention for the Safety of Life at Sea (SOLAS Convention), International Rules of Preventing Collision at Sea (COLREGS), State sanitary rules for sea vessels of Ukraine, etc. [8]

Ukrainian producers follow the innovations in the field of boats- and parts-making, constantly improving the production technologies in accordance with the global standards. For instance, usage of the cutting-edge design technologies and application of prominent airspace technologies in shipbuilding allows Ukrainian companies to create boat models which are not easy to find equal competitors in the world market to.

Products by Ukrainian manufacturers has international certificates of quality ISO 9001: 2009 and ISO 14001: 2006, [9] correspond to requirements of International ISO/FDIS-6185 standards, Directive EEC 94/25/EC of European Economic Community on pleasure boats and other requirements of international and domestic standards of quality. [10]
Quality control at Ukrainian enterprises is performed at every stage of production process, starting with the control of incoming raw materials and ending with tests of finished products.

Exported volumes and geography of exports

Ukraine-made passenger boats enjoy popularity not only in Ukraine, but abroad as well. For instance Private Enterprise ‘AQUA-STORM COMPANY’ supplies its products to over 15 countries of CIS and other world and has its own representative offices in Turkey, Greece, Spain, Romania, Austria, Germany, Poland, Belarus, Lithuania, Czech Republic and Slovakia. [11]

Shipbuilding Company ‘KOLIBRI’’s dealer network consolidates about three hundred official company representatives in more than twenty countries of the world. [12]

According to the results of 2019 Ukraine exported 97.08 thousand tons of cruise vessels, excursion ships, ferries, cargo vessels, barges and other floating craft meant for relocation of people and cargoes for the total amount of USD85.36 million. 
European countries purchased most – 31.86 thousand tons for the amount of USD33.15 million (Malta accounted for 13.26 thousand tons and USD9.35 million, Romania – for 6.88 thousand tons and USD8.03 million, Slovakia – for 5.14 thousand tons and USD6.45 million, the Netherlands – for 2.35 thousand tons and USD5.19 million, Italy – for 1.75 thousand tons and USD3.20 million, Bulgaria – for 2.45 thousand tons and USD921.0 thousand). 

The CIS countries acquired 32.43 tons for the amount of USD19.92 million (Russia accounted for 30.34 thousand tons and USD18.97 million, Moldova – for 2.08 thousand tons and USD950.0 thousand), Asian countries accounted for 5.98 thousand tons and USD4.78 million (Turkey accounted for 5.98 thousand tons and USD4.78 million), the countries of both Americas imported 20.88 thousand tons for the amount of USD25.15 million (the Islands of the Bahamas accounted for 8.86 thousand tons and USD13.75 million, the USA – for 2.98 thousand tons and USD5.71 million, Panama – for 2.05 thousand tons and USD3.70 million, Belize – for 2.81 thousand tons and USD1.00 million, the Virgin Islands – for 1.17 thousand tons and USD395.0 thousand), Australia and Oceania – for 5.91 thousand tons and USD2.34 million (the Marshall Islands – accounted for 5.91 thousand tons and USD2.34 million).
