Traditional Ukrainian decorations – brief overview

1.
Production of Ukrainian traditional decorations 

Decorations are an old Ukrainian tradition, and long back during the times of Trypillian culture women were making decorations. The oldest and the most common decoration in the territory of Ukraine is a beaded necklace (or korali – necklace made of cylindrical coral beads). Formation of traditional Ukrainian decorations has completed by end of 19th – beginning of 20th century and since then they have been occupying a very special place in Ukrainian culture.

Spiked by national exaltation the ethno symbolism is presently one of the brightest trends. Having become ‘a breath of fresh air’ for modern fashion, ethno decorations nowadays enjoy special popularity. 

Ukrainian ethno decorations have absorbed all wealth of Ukrainian culture, incredible energetics and attractiveness. Ukrainian ethno decorations are unique and inimitable. They carry old traditions along – each pattern, each drawing and ornament convey historical memory and old-time symbols. Hordany – traditional beaded necklaces of specific shape.

As said by the artist, she has chosen ethnic style particularly because of her strive to break-open Ukrainian immense talent and traditions to Europeans.

Ukrainian native Yaroslava Kellermann (decorations designer and inventor of ‘Small things count’ TM) has won in online-voting of international ‘Fuchsia Color In Jewelry Design’ contest, with exhibition in Vicenza (Italy) having become contest’s final stage. More than 100 works by contestants from all over the world have taken part in competition. [9]
Works by Ukrainian craftsmen adorn beauties in many countries of the world. For instance, mostly Ukrainian decorations are purchased in Poland, the USA, Australia, Germany, Denmark, Italy and Canada (‘Lianochko’ TM). [10]
According to the results of January-June 2020 Ukraine exported 170.2 kilograms of jewelries for the total amount of USD807.8 thousand. 

Switzerland purchased most – 0.2 kilograms for the amount of USD222.8 thousand. In Europe Switzerland was followed by: Germany with 36.3 kilograms and USD117.4 thousand, Poland with 38.5 kilograms and USD96.3 thousand, Latvia with 8.4 kilograms and USD29.0 thousand, Austria with 0.5 kilograms and USD25.3 thousand, Czech Republic with 0.6 kilograms and USD20.3 thousand, Lithuania with 4.7 kilograms and USD9.7 thousand, the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland with 0.1 kilograms and USD4.3 thousand. 

Belarus turned out to be the largest importer of Ukraine-made decorations among the CIS countries with the imported amounts of 31.0 kilograms and USD148.0 thousand. Kazakhstan followed with 21.4 kilograms and USD41.0 thousand, Russia – with 15.4 kilograms and USD19.8 thousand. The USA has to be noted among the countries of both Americas having purchased 0.7 kilograms for the amount of USD17.9 thousand. 

According to the results of July-December 2020 Ukraine exported 383.1 kilograms of jewelries for the total amount of USD1.49 million. 

European countries purchased most. Poland led with the purchase of 143.7 kilograms for the amount of USD268.5 thousand. Poland was followed by: Germany with 66.8 kilograms and USD253.5 thousand, Switzerland with 0.7 kilograms and USD135.8 thousand, Latvia with 18.7 kilograms and USD77.9 thousand, Austria with 0.7 kilograms and USD28.5 thousand, Czech Republic with 1.0 kilogram and USD28.0 thousand, the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland with 0.9 kilograms and USD8.1 thousand, Lithuania with 5.8 kilograms and USD5.5 thousand, Monaco with 2.7 kilograms and USD3.6 thousand.

Among the CIS countries Belarus purchased majority of jewelries ex-Ukraine – 90.2 kilograms for the amount of USD334.0 thousand. Moldova followed with 14.8 kilograms and USD45.1 thousand, Kazakhstan was next with 7.6 kilograms and USD16.8 thousand and Russia – with 5.1 kilograms and USD5.1 thousand. Israel has to be noted among Asian countries with the purchase of 2.1 kilograms for the amount of USD44.8 thousand as well as India with its 4.4 kilograms and USD3.8 thousand. The USA turned out to be the largest importer of Ukraine-made jewelries with 12.7 kilograms for the amount of USD184.5 thousand. [11]
