Ukraine’s shipbuilding and ship repair industry overview

1. Production volumes

Production volumes of Ukrainian shipbuilding industry grow. For instance, according to the results of 2018 the entire sales revenue of shipbuilding enterprises amounted to almost USD110.5 million (UAH3 billion), which surpassed the figure of 2017 by 32%. The revenue from ship repair services amounted to USD18.4 million (UAH501 million) which is more than in 2017 by 47%. [1]

2. Largest manufacturers

‘Nibulon’ shipbuilding and repair yard [2] is the leader among contemporary Ukraine’s shipbuilding enterprises. The shipyard is active in construction of complete vessels and ship repair. Presently the ‘Nibulon’ facilities are engaged in construction of barges, tugboats and reloaders. The first ever Ukrainian self-propelled 140-meter reloader (П-140 project) was built in 2019, and unique T3500 tugboat was constructed in 2018. [3]

The company constantly expands and modernizes the production. For instance, in 2017 it reconstructed the shipway in order to be capable of building up to 140 meters long vessels. ‘Nibulon’ builds fleet both for own purposes and on order. Presently due to renewed facilities the enterprise launches 6-7 vessels per annum. Till end-2019 the fleet of the company is going to comprise 80 vessels.

‘Plant Kuznya on Rybalsky’ PRSC [4] manufactures fishing industry, scientific research and geological prospecting vessels, port and rescue tugboats, garbage collectors, fire-, port- and transport-boats, container ships with up to 4000 tons load capacity, fast (up to 40 knots) car-and-passenger vessels, tankers, food transporters, chemicals transporters with up to 5000 tons dead weight, technical fleet vessels, self-propelled and towed barges, pontoons, floating docks with 1500-2000 tons load capacity, floating hotels (floatels), quay, recreation bases, floating workshops and so on. Vessels are built under supervision of the best-known world classifying societies, such as: Lloyd’s Register of Shipping (LRS), Germanischer Lloyd (GL or DNV GL as of 2013), Bureau Veritas (BV). The Plant was founded in 1862 and has since launched about a thousand ships and vessels of various applications.

‘Mykolayiv Shipyard’ SE [5] with its organizational and technological facilities is able to build modern highly-efficient and reliable vessels of all types with up to 28000 tons displacement. Hulls of the vessels are built at three shipways whilst partial installation and assembly of certain equipment and mechanisms takes place simultaneously. Apart from shipbuilding the Shipyard repairs vessels, produces the items of marine, general industry and special (licensed products for Nuclear Power Plants) machine-building.

‘Smart Maritime Group’ (SMG) LLC [6] comprises Kherson and Mykolayiv shipyards, building general purpose and offshore vessels, tankers, tugboats and so on. Production facilities and equipment of shipbuilding workshops allow to accomplish the complete cycle of ship construction starting with steel-cutting and hull-formation and finishing with installation of propulsive complex and special systems.

‘Artil’ LLC is a shipyard specializing in small air-cushion vessels, fishing boats and passenger-carrying ships, such as catamarans. More to the point, the enterprise takes part in a tender for construction of pilot boats for Ukrainian Sea Ports Authority.

Ukrainian shipbuilders are present in the segment of elite-class yachts too. For instance, ‘Black Sea Yachts’ shipyard [7] specializes in construction of motor- and sails-propelled yachts. In addition to that the company has designed the model of patrol boat for water police. In 2018 ‘Black Sea Yachts’ was included in the list of the best European enterprises according to ‘One to Watch’ version. [8]

Such fields of Ukraine’s shipbuilding market as modernization and repair of different kinds of ships are actively represented by ‘Azov Shipyard’, ‘Kiliya Shipbuilding & Repair Yard’, ‘Kyiv Shipbuilding and Ship repair yard’ and others.

‘Dnipropolymermash’ PJSC (Dnipro) is one of the leading Ukrainian companies in the field of machine-building. It produces molds, metal gear, agricultural machinery, equipment for mining-and-metallurgical complex and oil-extraction industry and since recently – the parts for shipbuilding and aviation.

3. Ukrainian shipyards actively fulfill the orders by foreign companies

For the last 11 years ‘SMG’’s shipyards have built more than 40 vessels to orders of foreign companies. Namely: three tank food transporters (RST27 project) for ‘SVL’ company, bulk-carrying ship (RSD20 project) for ‘Moscam Shipping’ company, five tugboats for ‘PKL’ company, ten off-shore-ship hulls for ‘Kleven Maritime AS’ company, eleven river-tank-chemical-transporter hulls for ‘Veka Shipbuilding B.V’ and ‘Zanen Shipbuilding B.V.’.

Lately Mylolayiv shipyard has put the saturated hull of ‘EMMA’ tank chemical transporter into water (order #10002) for the Dutch ‘VEKA’ company. ‘EMMA’ tank chemical transporter has been built according to the Dutch ‘CAVALLI’ project and is intended for transportation of petroleum products and chemicals. Mykolayiv experts have perfected ship-building technology – for instance, the assembly of bow and stern blocks was performed in the overkill position, which allowed to accelerate the construction and reduce the costs due to simplification of technological process. Building of the vessel took more than 1200 tons of high-quality marine steel produced by Mariupil Metallurgical Plant. [9]

Also the shipyard has commenced the works aimed at production of metal gear for ‘CHELSEA’-type bulk-carrier, which is being built at Kherson shipyard on the basis of ‘Volgo-Don’ donor ship (‘1565’ project). [10]
