Saint Nicholas is the most revered saint of the Orthodox Church. He is often called Nicholas the Pleasant or simply Nicholas, revered in any matter as the first assistant, and in misfortune as the main intercessor. On the back around the equilateral cross is written NIKA, which means “conquered” in Greek. This is the image of St. Nicholas himself, whose name translated means “conqueror of people.” The saint overcomes the sins of people with his miracles performed by the power of the Cross of the Lord, cleanses souls in love for God and saves them for eternal life. Along the edge of the reverse are written the initial words of the troparion to St. Nicholas: “The rule of faith and the image of meekness, self-control, the teacher will show you to your flock the truth of things.”
