On the front side of the eight-pointed cross, traditional for Orthodoxy, there is an icon of the Crucifixion of the Lord Jesus Christ with the Mother of God and the Apostle John the Theologian mournfully present. Weeping angels fly above. The whole world, earthly and heavenly, was horrified when it saw the torment of its Creator. But the Most Holy Theotokos suffered most of all, Who gave birth to the Infant Christ in the flesh and nourished Him with Her milk. And all the more magnificent is the feat of love of the Blessed Virgin Mary, Who, having accepted such suffering, did not turn away from the people who crucified Her beloved Son, but became their merciful Mother. Therefore, every Christian in his heart always sings praises to our Most Pure, Most Blessed, Glorious Lady Theotokos, “More Honest Cherub and Most Glorious Without Comparison Seraphim.”
Crowned by angels, surrounded by seraphim and cherubim, the Most Holy Theotokos is depicted on the back of the icon in the miraculous image of Her “Mammal.” In this image, the Most Holy Theotokos is revered as the Giver of Eternal Life and the merciful consoler. She is especially revered by young mothers who pray to Her for the health of their children.
Copies of the miraculous image soon became widespread throughout Southern Europe: Italy, Greece, and the Balkans. In southern Russia, this icon also became one of the most revered. The Most Holy Theotokos glorified the list brought to Odessa at the end of the 19th century with miracles. St. Gabriel of Athos. This miraculous image is now in the Holy Dormition Odessa Monastery in the chapel consecrated in the name of the Mammal icon. On the frame of the icon on the right and left there are rare shrines: part of the robe of Christ the Savior and part of the tunic of the Most Holy Theotokos.
The celebration of the image of the Mother of God "Mammal" takes place at the Kareya cell on the day of memory of St. Sava of Serbia - January 12 (25).
