The front side of the cross depicts the Crucifixion of the Lord Jesus Christ. Standing before Him on both sides in deesis (praying for people) are the Most Holy Theotokos and the prophet John the Baptist, the Baptist of the Lord. Above and below the composition of the Deesis is continued by the images of the archangels Michael and Gabriel. On the reverse is the Valaam Icon of the Blessed Virgin Mary. The icon was painted in 1878 by the hieromonk of the Valaam Monastery, Fr. Alipius and became famous for the miracle of healing of the bourgeois Natalya Andreeva in 1897. To the left of the Mother of God is depicted the Holy Blessed Prince Alexander Nevsky (1221–1263), to the right is the Holy Blessed Prince Dimitry Donskoy (1350–1389). These are the patron saints of warriors, protectors of people from enemies of body and soul. At the top is the image of the Metropolitan of Moscow, Saint Alexy (1293–1378). They ask him for help in raising children and with various ailments, especially eye disease. Below is an icon of St. Sergius of Radonezh (1314–1392), the great wonderworker and healer. People turn to him in various illnesses, difficult life situations, and also when children have learning difficulties.
