The front side depicts the Crucifixion of the Lord Jesus Christ. Standing before Him on both sides are the Most Holy Theotokos and St. The prophet and Forerunner of the Lord John the Baptist, who has special boldness before God, prays for all people.
Icons where they are depicted praying to Christ are called deesis, which means “prayer.”
On the reverse are written the first lines of Psalm 67, which became the beginning of the famous protective prayer: “May God rise again and let His enemies be scattered, and may those who hate Him flee from His presence.”
