The image of the Lord Jesus Christ is the main one on every cross. It is to Christ, who came to earth for our salvation, that all prayers are offered. The Most Holy Theotokos, angels and saints are the Lord’s helpers in the matter of salvation and intercessors for people before God. On the front side the image of the Lord is depicted twice. The central part is occupied by the icon of the Crucifixion of Christ - the image of the sacrifice made by the Lord for the sins of people.
The Church calls the cross “the great weapon of Christ,” because, having suffered and died, the Lord defeated death and deprived the devil of his power over the world. Therefore, next to the titles of the Holy Name of Christ it is written “NIKA”, which means “conquered.”
Above the Crucifixion there is an icon of the Savior Not Made by Hands. This image of Christ was the greatest shrine of the Christian world. In Rus', the image was revered as a spiritual shield from any enemy attack: it was embroidered on military banners, placed above the gates of fortresses, depicted at the head of pectoral crosses and on security medallions.
The upper part of the cross with the image of the Savior Not Made by Hands is made like a banner - this is an ancient form of a military banner. Banners were worn by troops for protection and spiritual assistance during battles. Often on banners one could see the Kazan Icon of the Mother of God and Archangel Michael. Their images are placed on the reverse side of the cross.
Archangel Michael is the most powerful of the angels. It was he who overthrew the devil and stood at the head of the angels to fight the demonic forces. His name means “Who is God?”, as he is the most powerful and formidable enemy of evil. In Rus' they also believed that Archangel Michael, as an implacable enemy of the devil, protects the souls of the dead from demonic attacks, escorting them to Heaven. Therefore, cemetery churches were often dedicated to him.
Like a military banner in an invisible battle against evil, the Kazan Icon of the Most Holy Theotokos is placed above the image of Archangel Michael. The great miraculous icon appeared at the fire in Kazan in 1579 and has since been revered as the protector of Russia.
