The icon depicts the Most Holy Theotokos and John the Baptist, the Baptist of the Lord. Having bowed, they turned to Jesus Christ sitting on the throne and extended their hands to Him in a pleading gesture. This is one of the most common iconographies in Orthodoxy. It is called "Deesis", that is, "prayer". The Deesis placed on the icon is an image of the prayer of the Mother of God and John the Baptist for the person who wears it.
The main defenders at this Judgment for people will be the Mother of God and John the Baptist, who stand closest to the Divine Throne. They are the first helpers and intercessors of man in his earthly life. Therefore, every believer comes first to them turns his prayers asking for spiritual help. Such a prayer-petition is also placed on the icon: “Lord Jesus Christ, for the sake of Thy most honorable Mother and Forerunner and Thy Baptist, have mercy on me.”
The back of the image is decorated with plant shoots on which birds sit. This is an allegory of human souls that inhabit the Garden of Eden. A similar symbolic image appeared in the first centuries of Christianity and for centuries remains one of the most common ornamental motifs of the Church.
