The Holy Martyr Love lived in Italy and suffered in Rome along with her mother Sophia and older sisters, Vera and Nadezhda. She became one of the very first and youngest martyrs for Christ. In 137, when Lyubov accepted the crown of martyrdom, she was only nine years old.

According to Tradition, together with her older sisters, Vera and Nadezhda, Lyubov was raised by her mother in Christian piety. Sofia was a widow and devoted all her time to her daughters, instructing them in faith and love for God. The family lived openly, without hiding their belonging to Christianity, which in pagan Rome was tantamount to a crime. By order of Emperor Hadrian, the pious family was taken to the palace. With rich gifts and promises of a comfortable and happy life at the palace, the emperor tried to seduce the girls from the Christian path and force them to worship the goddess Artemis. But nothing could tempt them: they firmly confessed their faith in Christ. Then Emperor Hadrian ordered that Sophia’s daughters be subjected to severe torture. Love, as the youngest, observed the suffering and death of her older sisters, but remained courageous and unshakable in her faith. When it was her turn to appear before the executioner, she herself entered the burning oven and, kept there by an angel, remained unharmed. Then they tied the girl to a wheel and began to beat her with sticks until her body turned into a continuous bloody wound. Enduring torment beyond human understanding, the girl constantly prayed and cried out to God. Finally, like her older sisters, she was beheaded with a sword. The bodies of the children were given to their mother, who buried them on a high hill. She remained at the girls’ grave for three days until she herself fell asleep in the Lord. The believers buried her there, along with her daughters. Saint Sophia was canonized as a martyr because, if not with her body, then with her heart she also accepted suffering for Christ. She brought as a Gift to the Holy Trinity the most precious thing she had: her three virtuous daughters - Faith, Hope and Love.
