On the front side of the body icon is the image of the Lord Jesus Christ, not made by hands, revered as one of the most powerful protective symbols of Orthodoxy. The Lord Himself imprinted this image on the cloth and sent it to the leprosy King Abgar of Edessa for healing. On the ear there is an explanatory inscription “Image Not Made by Hands.”
On the back is a prayer to the Savior Not Made by Hands: “Lord, my God! Enlighten my darkness! We worship Your Most Pure Image, O Good One, asking for forgiveness of our sins.”
