On the front side of the cross is depicted the image of the Savior not made by hands, which He Himself imprinted on the board and handed over for healing to the king of Edessa, who was sick with leprosy. The image of the “Savior Not Made by Hands” has since been revered as the most powerful protective symbol of Christianity. On the back are written the initial verses of a protective prayer to the Honorable Cross of the Lord. This prayer is read in danger, and also carried with oneself for protection from evil forces: “May God rise again, and may His enemies be scattered, and may those who hate Him flee from His face.
