This iconographic technique has sometimes been found on crosses since the 14th century. It becomes clear if we remember that the Miraculous Image, as most clearly expressing the idea of ​​Incarnation and Sacrifice, starting from the 11th century, and from the 12th century. Almost everywhere, it takes the place of the image of Christ the Priest in Russian churches. Therefore, such a composition with the Image Not Made by Hands in the center reveals the idea of ​​the Crucifixion as the liturgical sacrifice of Christ. Here the symbolism of the Savior Not Made by Hands appears with great force, since the miracle of the appearance of an icon not made by hands was compared with the miracle of the transfusion of the Holy Gifts in the sacrament of the Eucharist. The role of the church sacrament is emphasized by the image of the protector of the Church, St. Nicholas, depicted at the bottom of the cross.
